PS4 Storage - Internal Hard Drives

Which are the best internal hard drives for increasing PS4 storage?

As games have gradually and consistently got better, so has the amount of storage space they, their download and their saved game data takes up. When the PS4 was first launched 500GB was seen as a huge amount of space that only the most hardcore of gamers would fill, however as games grew in size along came the 1TB version - and even that is not big enough for some people! Those who find themselves needing extra storage have a myriad of options at their fingertips, not only in terms of whether they want to for external or internal storage, but also the vast array of models currently available on the market.

In this article we will delve into the world of internal hard drives that can be used in a PS4 to expand your storage. We have analysed many different brands and models and have found the best within several different categories (listed below). We hope you find this guide useful, but if you do have any questions suggestions or feedback, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Which is the most cost effective hard drive? In our opinion it’s the Seagate BarraCuda (1TB). Although some people may stick their noses up at HDD drives, there are many still available that offer decent performance and a large capacity - and this model is one of them. It won’t boost the speed of the system, but if you want a speed boost you’d not be considering an HDD. This particular model comes in several options, from 500GB to 4TB, is SATA 6.0 Gb/s, has a 250MB/s transfer rate and comes with a 24 month warranty. It has many excellent reviews - and rightly so.

Which is the best SSHD for the PS4? We think another Seagate model has this category wrapped up, but this time it’s the FireCuda Gaming SSHD (2TB). SSHD drives are a step up from the standard HDD drive and will help to increase speed as well as offer more storage space. SSHD drives are made with less moving parts than HDD drives, therefore it is less prone to malfunction and corruption. In addition, although it won’t offer the performance of a SSD drive, it will provide a decent amount of performance for a fraction of the cost. In terms of cost effectiveness this is by far and away one the best PS4 storage options available; and what’s more - it was designed specifically for gaming purposes. The flash technology of this model can even increase your loading times by up to four times, so, if, like me, you hate slow loading times then this is definitely a model you should seriously consider.

Which is the best overall hard drive for the PS4? After considering many models of hard drive we finally reached a decision and we firmly believe the Samsung 850 PRO (1TB) is the winner. This SSD drive is designed for the hardcore gamer. The gamer who wants expanded memory and rapid speed increases. Thanks to the fact it has zero moving parts it is far less prone to damage and corruption, it is completely silent, comes with a huge 10 year warranty, will all but eliminate frame rate drops and will provide a massively increase gaming experience. Granted, it is expensive due to the fact that it is an SSD drive, but if your budget allows it then we cannot recommend a better option for expandable PS4 storage than this.
